FIAT X 1/8 prototype - 1970

Primary planned as a noble brother of the X 1/9 the nowadays as Lancia Beta Montecarlo known car should have rounded up the Fiat sports car program.
Both development and later on building the car had been laid into hands of Sergio Pininfarina. In 1970 the development code X 1/8 appeared on the first plans which was changed to X 1/20 later on.

But it came different. A wonderfully lavish and energy dissipating sporty car only could impair the image of a mass producer like Fiat in the aftermath of the oil crisis of 1973. Whereas group daughter Lancia presented the acting world rallye champion with the Stratos. Marketing of the little darter seemed to be easier therefore.
As reminiscence of the rallye victory in the french Sea Alpes the designation Montecarlo had been chosen.

Placed on the market as Lancia Beta Montecarlo.
